How do you create your illustrations?
My pictures are all handcrafted collages. I cut or tear various papers, and paint the details in gouache. I love the tactile effects I can achieve this way.
People are often surprised when they see my rough sketches. For these, I use brown paper bags! I tear the brown paper into the shapes I need for my initial layouts.
Did you always want to be an illustrator?
Absolutely! Some of my earliest memories are of crayons and coloring books. I still love the smell of a new box of Crayolas! I also have a very distinct memory of winning a coloring contest at age 7: the prize was a little doll in a blue dress!
Where are you from?
I live in Allendale, NJ with my husband Ken, and Gatsby, our pug. We have 2 wonderful daughters, Lesley and Julia.
Where did you go to school?
I received a BA in Studio Art from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY and an MA in Art Education from the College of New Rochelle, NY. I have also studied at Parsons School of Design and at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. I love taking classes; I feel there’s always more to learn!
